The Story of a Gainax Fanboy

| May. 20th, 2009 12:49 pm I knew something would make me post again I read an article today, over on the Escapist, about the global nature of game development. There isn't, however, much of an 'industry cluster'. Yeah sure, there are a lot of MMOs from Korea, freeware MMOs at that. There are a lot of long narrative games from France, Rockstar is bassed in Scotland (you probably didn't know that, I didn't either.) and in the UK they tend to make visually stunning games. And the team behind Killzone is from Holland. But there isn't a real 'regional' style to video games.
one thing the article said however, made me think
We actually know very little about the economic interplay between organizations within these industry hotbeds. Conversely, if we look at the world of visual arts (paintings, galleries, etc.), the picture grows more clear. We know artists flock to megatropolises like New York and Paris, often living in specialized sub-communities with other artists. Low-rent loft space serves as a place to create and show work. In turn, this loft party circuit enables artists to "spy" on one another, assessing new techniques and ideas. Galleries typically spring up in close proximity to facilitate the discovery of new talent. And collectors appreciate the ability to shop around easily. These factors are the centripetal force that pulls a creative ecosystem together. (Della Rocha, Jason, Cluster Fun, TheEscapist,) (and don't hurt me if that citiation is off...) Yeah, the art flat experience is one kind of cluster, but is this changing? I know most 'proffesional artists' head to an art school to pick it up as a trade, but many people involved in making digital art of some kind often post to sites like DeviantArt, or Sheezyart. The internet gives out another kind of cluster where artists can learn new things and 'steal riffs' from other artists. (some even make an effort to teach).
I donno, maybe as videogames become more popular that will happen more in geographic senses. Right now it's still a pretty niche market (Europeans, the americas (north and south) and Japanese buy most game consoles, while the ecconomy for it in other places is pretty sparse) And there isn't a long tradition behind digital games like there is behind art. Maybe there will be a 'carnege hall' and a 'house of blues' for games someday. for now, we might have to rely on PAX for it.... Leave a comment

| May. 6th, 2009 11:15 am I have wanted to write this for a while There is a game I am addicted to, a Korean MMO. Unlike most games by the Koreans however, it doesn't involve 12 year olds being awesome and throwing spells around, nor does it involve a bunch of cool looking people with outrageous hair. It's much more simple, and addicting (for me anyways) ( I've ranted about Navy Field before.... )
I guess, if you're a history buff, or like top down games, or you like artillery kind of games but are tired of pocket tanks, then give NF a try, otherwise it's probably not for you. Leave a comment

| Apr. 27th, 2009 01:08 pm CARPENTER BEE! I just had a run in with a very large bee that had infiltrated my house :D
I managed to get it to leave, but this brings up something for me.
Why am I so afraid of that buzzing noise? I don't get it, any time I hear a bee/wasp/fly/bug I tense up from the 'bzzzzzzzzt'
Why is this? There's no real reason to fear something like a carpenter bee, it flew around my house for hours but never 'attacked' me, in fact it could've cared less about me, it wanted out. Yet every time I tried to help it, I would hear that buzzing and lose my nerve.

| Apr. 16th, 2009 10:07 am LIVE! So, for the past three days, the laptop was dead. Three days ago it had borune the weight of suffering, from many things but mostly old age and probably being turned on longer than it should have. Finally it cried out "It is finished!" (though it actually sounded like a wookie war cry) and gave up the ghost. It's windows were gone.
but, on the third day, it rose up again, and a technician along with his messanger (named Ubuntu) said.
...why are you still here? :P
Yes, laptop died, but I'm putting ubuntu on it, I'm also a bit late for this joke...but yes, my laptop had an uncertain future for the past few days, yesterday it finally gave out completely while I was trying to use a diffrent linux to PULL all the files off of it. So, no go for that, but I'm putting Ubuntu on a 4Gig hard drive now. I find it really odd that 4gig flash drives are so cheep, I found one for $10. I guess this is why my flash teacher told us "Don't buy a new laptop this year! It will be out of date by september"
In short, dead computer lives again! :O

| Apr. 10th, 2009 03:28 pm I don't understand it.... I'm listening to the radio, about the argument on the Texas school board, about the language of the science textbook standard. And I don't understand something.
The argument is this, "Should we accept books that endorse the leading and most accepted scientific theory about the creation of the world?" or "Should we say that 'this is a theory' and give word to other, less well known theories?" This, is a massive fight, more about book publishing than anything else.
But like the title says, I don't understand it.
I get that Christians don't want it taught that 'the earth formed this way!' when the book they read as truth says it otherwise, I understand that.
I get that most scientists think that if you try to 'teach' by religion then that's returning to the dark ages when it will end up that someone will say 'the church knows best' I get that.
What I don't get...is this, great zeal that both sides fight about this issue with. (maybe it's because I personally, though a christian and a follower of science, don't have any great zeal about it) Most people are like me, and would really like to form an opinion about this but the moment we open our mouth someone shouts "THAT'S WRONG"
I don't understand, and I rant :S

| Apr. 6th, 2009 10:52 am mini MRJ: Desolation Row I just wanted to rant about this for a little bit. Desolation Row is a song by Bob Dylan, it's the last song on his 'Highway 61 Revisited' album. It's a surreal journey to...well I donno really. Is it a reference to 'death row' is it the circus, is it the main street? Who knows, but that's one thing I like about Dylan, the point of his songs isn't just thrown out there. I actually listened to this whole album once, my dad has it on vinal and on tape. The other thing about this song is that it's way longer than ten minutes. Even with the length it's a good wrap up to the album.
Then I heard, on the radio, a cover of Desolation Row. I thought it might have been ACDC actually, until they said it was 'My Chemical Romance'. Ok, I have 'The Black Parade' and I think their an OK band, I like their emulation of classic rock. (And yes, I have heard since that their lead can't really sing) Combined they add about 3 minutes to this review, making the total running time of these two songs about 15 minutes, almost half an album. The other thing is they added a whole lot of energy to the song. I'm not sure if the last verse is actually from Desolation Row's lyrics, but the thing is it felt much more like a 'tribute to' the song, rather than a cover. (Probably the length of it has something to do with it, no way they could fit ten plus minutes of lyrics into three.) For me, it's just interesting to hear it in such a different style.
Ok, /rant I'm done, off to work :P Current Location: Home Current Mood: contemplative Current Music: pandora

| Mar. 27th, 2009 06:46 pm MRJ: Maskineri MUSIC REVIEW JOURNAL
New name for this segment (maybe I'll get a mood or image too) Anyways, on to one of my favorite bands. It's official, I like having a way to spend money over the internet, and I love having access to digital downloads. Anyways, I've, for a long time, been a long distance fan of Kaisers Orchestra, because I was mesmerized by their music, and when I saw the video for the Evig Piet single I was hooked. I've never been able to get ahold of a hard copy (or even a digital copy) of their music without file sharing until now (and as I may or may not have said my internet pirate days are over)
( Maskineri=Machinery )
I know some of you might not like international music, but then again there's someone watching my journal in Europe already...
(Btw, to him this probably isn't digging up something new :/ which was btw, the goal of this thing)
PS: I had to write this twice because LJ was being stupid. Current Location: Home Current Mood: accomplished Current Music: Apokalyps Meg

| Mar. 26th, 2009 10:20 am Maestro! Say, anyone out there a fan of Kaizer's orchestra? Any advice on which of their ablums to buy? I'm leaning to the newest one "Maskineri" but I heard that Maestro (And Evig Pint) are a good listen as well.
I've wanted some of this band's music for the longest time...but I have one question
WHY ARE CD'S FROM EUROPE $30!? I mean, wtf right? Is there an import tarif I don't know about, or is the Euro worth that much more? Current Location: home Current Mood: bouncy

| Mar. 8th, 2009 03:14 pm WTF africa pt.2 Many of you might not remember my first WTF AFRICA rant, about the riots in Kenya (btw, that issue is still tense but somewhat resolved from what I heard) But this one is truly a wtf. Last week, the president of Sudan was told he had a warrant for his arrest by the ICC (international criminal court) Now at the time, the president was also trying to negotiate peace with the rebels in the western part of his country. (or, he was 'talking' to them)
The situation is far more complicated than anyone will have you believe, but the simple part is there's a lot of people, in that western area of Sudan, who have no home, and may die, were it not for the UN and Red Cross aid.
The president of that country is now about to kick out about 13 human aid organizations because he is being targeted for arrest for war crimes. I would also like to say I can't find like a 'wire' story on this incident, which I for one think would be more unbiased. I donno about you, but I feel like this is a very immature thing to do. I'm sorry for no music review, but I checked my email today, and found out about this, and I had to rant about it. From what I understand, KICKING foreign aid out for the REASON that you were charged with 'human rights violations,' isn't this more evidence against you? This is an action that can only provoke action from the international community, during the Olympic games, China, Sudan's big ally in the UN, got sick of their shit, and I think it may happen again. And they picked the worst time to do this, because the US diplomacy machine is trying to work out something in the middle east.
Again, WTF AFRICA!!!
edit: the name of the country this is taking place in is Sudan, the name of the region is Darfur. Current Mood: bitchy

| Feb. 28th, 2009 02:46 pm This segment needs a new name... I've been doing this every week now and I wanna call it something other than "Non-X Albums you should own" Anyways, on to the band of the now. Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Finland, starting in 1997, and playing music since then. They have always had a female lead vocalist, and a power metal sound. The vocalist has changed recently though. A few years ago, the now former vocalist for nightwish was no longer part of the band. I do not know details about what happened...but I do remember hearing that she is an opera singer, and that the new vocalist is too.(I may be wrong)
( I think their choir got better too! )
Also, name suggestions for this segment?? Current Location: Home Current Mood: touched Current Music: Nightwish-for the heart I once had

| Feb. 13th, 2009 12:29 pm Blar EvE May post a music thing later on today, may not.
Main thing, EvE online...decent idea, I've been playing it quite a bit now that I've gotten it to work. Not truly a bad game, I just wish there were more people making use of it's concepts. They are not bad ideas. The game rewards you for "Not playing the game" which is good, as we can't play the game all the time. The gameplay is a little overcomplicated though.
Like I said, not bad, but I wish it had competition, as I like EvE alright, but I wanna see someone do that "spaceship RPG" thing....and do it better. Current Location: Minmatar Current Mood: scanning....

Edit: I suppose it's a ilttle silly however, to feel angry that you are not feeling...because in feeling anger/fear that is an emotion.

| Jan. 30th, 2009 11:52 am Save me from this game Pt2 Alternatively, "Fu**n Bethdesda!"
A friend let me borrow Fallout 3, and now I'm stuck playing THAT game. I only hope I can find something that inspires me to continue with life and quit staying up until 3AM every night. I heard the ending of that game isnt even worth it D: (No, seriously, after my one friend beat it, he called me to rant about how disapointed he was in the game)

( Minor Rant, but mostly a review I guess ) Anyways, sorry for the rant. I do plan on getting back to music sometime. But add College homework to this mix and I give myself very little time
